Hospital
official sentenced to jail and lashes
By Majed Al-Bassam, Arab News Staff
ABHA, 3 October The Court of Cassation in
Riyadh has sentenced a senior government hospital
employee for two months in jail and 120 lashes for
taking women to the hospitals X-ray department
and being alone with them.
The man was working as director of the X-ray department
at Dawadmi General Hospital, 355 km west of Riyadh.
Men being alone with other women is against Shariah
and a violation of Health Ministry rules.
The Riyadh court was overruling a verdict issued
by a lower court in Arja, near Dawadmi, which had
sentenced the man to five days jail and 50 lashes.
The court in Arja had also taken an undertaking from
the employee, who was working at the hospital for
eight years, that he would not repeat the offense.
An informed source told Arab News that the defendant
raised objection to the verdict, claiming he was well
known in society for his good behavior and trustworthiness.
He produced letters of good conduct from the hospitals
director and administrative manager to prove his claim.
