Drove
up to the White Mountains in upstate New Hampshire
, appx 4 1/2 hour drive. We stayed at the wild cat
inn tavern (wildcattavern.com)
It was a pretty coz country inn bed and breakfast.
The room was nice because it had a bedroom and a small
living room. The bar downstairs was hopping Sat. night
and mostly dead the rest of the weekend. We had the
fireplace all to ourselves Sunday night.
We
stayed in Jackson - a quaint old village geared mainly
for tourism. Lots of old bed and breakfasts , restaurants
, a few bars , and x-country and downhill skier outfitters.
Part of the reason we stayed there was because you
can cross-country right out the back door of wherever
your staying , but we never ended up doing it because
of time constraints and a basic mistrust of cross-country
skiing (I did it a few years ago and it seems more
like work- Lori can`t ski up or down hill so she would
be on a learning curve) - She wanted to snow shoe
as we did it upstate Ny at my moms a few weeks back
but we didn`t find any place for that til we were
on way home. oh well....
Anyway
I did get to ski - I drove first to Wildcat Mountain
to ski but it was wicked windy and snow was just blowing
all over the place. I ended up skiiing at Attitash
Bear Peak mountain (I belive this mountain was bought
by American ski co. owners of Killington , sunday
river etc;) Nice mountain because of the two peaks
but no where near the size of Killington. Still had
a number of good runs , I expected an easy day of
skiing as I don`t usually go nuts when skiing alone.
I was simply wearing a semi-water resistant pair of
Old Navy comfy pants and sure enough I wiped for almost
no particular reason at all. Otherwise a good day
of skiing.
We
also visited North Conway , only 15 min away , where
all the outlets are --appx 200 ... Eddie Bauer , geoffrey
Beene etc; Also they have a number of "village
shops" that were pretty cool.
Stopped by the area Pinkham Notch - an apalachian
mountain club area where hikers , snow shoers , cross
country skiiers hang. Lori and I just looked at eachother
in amazement considering that these people hike in
this weather (it was very cold , windy and snowy)
This stop I believe was at the base on one side of
Mount washington , which is the tallest peak in the
area and owns the most extreme weather at its peak
- visit http://www.mountwashington.org/
to learn more. To put Mt washington in perspective
and consider hiking it in 10 below weather at its
base, it is not uncommon in the Summer , hiking up
the mountain that you run into snow storms , hail
, quick and sudden temperature drops of 50 degrees.
Anyway , we didn`t hike up it and unlike x-country
skiing , never made pretend we were considering it.
Did
plenty of eating on this vacation , did not skip a
meal ...no we did not. Breakfast bright and early
, half asleep , LUNCH < DINNER !!!! every day.
ON
the way home we drove down scenic Kangamangus highway
, Most of the pictures I have were taken during this
little 34 mile trip. It actually didn`t add a whole
lot of time to our trip as I thought. We weren`t in
a hurry on the way home.
We
stopped in Manchester New hampshire for lunch and
to screw off in a city for a bit. With the many maps
and brochures I always aquire during such trips we
discovered a used book store and picked up like $30
worth of books. I got a number of cool Oversized illustrated
books. A few historical atlases , some beautiful photography
style coffee table books etc; I paid less than $5
for books that sell new at $50 + . We found a just
opened up spanish restaurant and ate some killer food.
I don`t actually know what it was but it was killer.
Well
thats a quickie of our trip , wether it sounds like
it or not , it was a nice little getaway. My type
of thing. Check out some of the pictures
